FLOWER BOUQUET GARDEN
  1. AMARANTH-Love Lies Bleeding,A. caudatus,annual,very long, pendant flower heads and blood red-purple foliage, to 2-3', striking border plant. 
  2. BACHELOR BUTTONS,Centaurea cyanus,annual, mixed colors-red, pink, blue, and white. Self sowing, hardy. Makes a good cut and nice dry flower. 
  3. COLUMBINE-Home Garden Mix, Aquilegia vulgaris,perennial, many solid and bicolor old fashioned flowers. Pre-chill 3-4 weeks for best germination. Shady spots as well as sun.
  4. MARIGOLD-Spanish Brocade, T. patula,annual, good and faithful performers, blooms all summer, in a mix of yellows, oranges, and reds. Flowers dry nicely.
  5. COSMOS-Sensation, bipinnatus,annual, 4" flowers all summer, old fashioned flower. Ferny foliage, to 4'; hardy. White, pink, purple.
  6. FOXGLOVE,Digitalis purpurea,perennial, much loved border plants. White, pink and purple flowers look as though a fox really could slip them on as gloves. Makes the heart medicine digitalis–very toxic. Blooms form on tall spikes; very showy.
  7. NASTURTIUM-Jewel Mix, Tropaeolum majus, annual,popular dwarf type; makes a cheery mound of red and yellow flowers amidst bright, apple-green foliage. Edible flowers.
  8. SWEET WILLIAM,Home Garden Mix, Dianthus barbatus,annual, old fashioned, fragrant plants with delightful, bicolored blooms.
  9. POPPY-Corn,Papaver rhoeas,annual, also called Common Field or Flanders Poppy. Small petalled, deep red blooms, to 3'. Naturalizes easily.
  10. CALLIOPSIS,Coreopsis tinctoria,annual,varicolored flowers used for dyeing. Gaily mottled and splashed red and yellow flowers. Self sows.

 

 

KITCHEN DELIGHT GARDEN

1.   BASIL-Sweet, O. basilicum, large leaved, the most widely planted form.

2.    PARSLEY-Moss Curled Plain,used extensively as a garnish. Rich in vitamin C and iron. Naturally freshens the breath. Cook with vegetables, meats, soups, stews, roasts, sauces or butters to pull the flavors together

3.   SPEARMINT,Mentha spicata, grows to 2', has a milder taste than peppermint. Used for cooking, aromatherapy, oils, and digestion.

4.   CUMIN,Cuminum cyminum, to 6-12",culinary herb for Mexican, Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. Heat loving plant.

5.   SAVORY-summer, Satureja hortensis, a milder culinary savory, self sows. To 12", loves sun. Used as an anti-flatulent in bean dishes.

6.   THYME-Garden,Thymus vulgaris, erect, woody based, evergreen shrub, to 12" tall. Essential to French cuisine. Honeybees love the pretty, pink-purple blossoms. Leaves are used to treat coughs and colds.

7.   CORIANDER,Coriandrum sativum, also called Chinese Parsley, easy to grow.  Used in Mexican cooking. Ancient herb found in Egyptian tombs, used in China for 1,000+ years.

8.   DILL-Mammoth, A.graveolens, tall variety, best for pickling. Companion plant for cabbage, carrot, lettuce, onion.

9.   OREGANO-Wild,O.vulgare, has distinctive, purple-pink flowers that attract honeybees. Mild flavor; 2' tall.

10. SAGE-Garden, Salvia officinalis, to 3', prefers well limed soil. Has been used as a folk remedy for centuries as astringent and antibacterial treatment. Stratify 2 weeks.

 

VICTORY VEGETABLE GARDEN

1.     LETTUCE-Buttercrunch(50-60 days) hearty, delicious, most popular, won’t become bitter. Slow bolting, dark green, midsummer maturity

2.     BROCCOLI-Decicco heirloom(60 days) Italian, home garden favorite, 3-4" heads, lots of side shoots, excellent quality, good in freezer, old standby, 1890

3.     CABBAGE-Golden Acre(58-70 days) perfect globe shaped head, 3 lbs., very firm, excellent taste.

4.     BUSH BEANS-Kentucky Wonder Bush,tender stringless round fleshy 8" pods have fine quality and flavor. Heavy yields over an extended period. Brilliant carmine-colored seeds. Bush plants, 65 days.

5.     PEAS-Tall Telephone(68-78 days) preferred by old time pea growers, leading variety of late shelling pea, grows to 6', needs trellising, introduced in 1878. Resistant to wilt. Heirloom.

6.     SPINACH-Bloomsdale Long Standing(39-48 days) slow bolting, first choice for spring planting except in hot climates, savoyed leaves, 1925. Heirloom.

7.     CUCUMBER-White Wonder(58 days) pure white, uniform, 5-7" fruits, good for slicing or pickling. Heat tolerant, from NY, pre-1890. Heirloom.

8.     EGGPLANT-Italian White(72-78 days) sweet mushroom flavor, much milder than purple eggplants, never bitter. At peak of perfection when duck egg size. Favorite from Italy. Rare.

9.     SQUASH-Early Yellow Crookneck(42-60 days) traditional bush type, light yellow, smooth skinned fruits with creamy, white, mild, sweet flesh. Harvest while fruit skin can easily be cut with a fingernail. North American, 1700. Heirloom.

10. TOMATO-Brandywine(95 days) indeterminate, exceptional old Amish variety. Large, somewhat flattened, pink, very juicy and sweet flavored fruit, 1885. Heirloom
